Why hire a professional photographer for your wedding?
If your wedding is coming up soon then you have probably planned most of the necessities. You’ve arranged the venue, chosen your cake and booked a caterer. You have chosen your wedding theme colours, selected your flowers and your wedding gown is hung up and ready to go.
You are now thinking about capturing the precious memories of your big day as photographic images. Maybe you’ve thought about asking a relative or friend, who is an amateur photographer to take on the responsibility.
That way you can save yourself some money, diverting the cash to other areas of your budget. You should definitely not go down this path.
You should hire a professional wedding photographer
The benefits of hiring a professional photographer are far greater than the cost savings you get when you hire an amateur photographer! There are dozens of special moments that happen on your wedding day and in a flash they’re gone and forgotten if not captured in your photos.
Some of the key benefits of professional wedding photography
Having hired a professional wedding photographer in Lewes, you are assured of the highest quality images, created and edited using the best expertise, cameras and photo editing software.
When you hire professional photographers for your wedding in Lewes, you get privileged access to the best photography knowledge and skills, together with the best equipment and software to produce the best quality pictures possible.
The equipment such as cameras, are just a part of what it takes to capture great wedding photographs. But for many, who perceive that smartphone cameras are amazing, it is really tempting to try and cut costs on your wedding photography. Many have found this to be a big mistake. Everyone desires photographs that are skillfully composed and expertly captured for their wedding day. I’ll explain some of these benefits in greater detail, to help you understand the value in paying a professional wedding photographer for the day in Lewes.
Experts with their camera gear and a host of external factors, such as weather conditions. A photographerís resultant images will not be as impressive as they could be if they don’t have a variety of camera lenses and the knowledge and skills to use them, together with various lighting options. Professional wedding photographers are better, not just because of their skill and experience, but also the equipment that they use. Anyone can buy a DSLR camera, but it takes great skill to unlock the potential of the equipment. The type of equipment used is crucial, but just as if not more important, is the person handling the equipment. In order to get your dream photos, you need high end camera equipment and a wedding photographer with the experience, talent and knowledge to use it appropriately to its full potential. This includes being able to take great pictures in different photographic lighting conditions, indoors and outdoors, with different natural and artificial light at the venue.

The Roles of Expert Photographers
When you hire a professional wedding photographer in Lewes, you can expect their full attention, whereas with a friend or family member theyíre far more likely to become distracted. The role of the professional photographer is very clearly defined, whereas a family member will likely want to get involved in the celebrations where possible.
A professional photographer wonít be tempted to chat with guests, grab a quick beer, or be first in line for cake when they should be taking an important shot. They will be concentrating on the job of getting the best possible pictures they can for your wedding.
Something else that is a factor is that wedding guests tend to respect photo opportunities much more when they are gently marshalled by professional photographers. When family members are taking control of a family photo session it tends to be taken less seriously.
Skill with Different Styles of Photography
In order to get a specific photographic style, you need a professional photographer whose style matches what youíre looking for. If you want to ask an amateur photographer, the chances are that theyíre not familiar with the differences between traditional, contemporary, fine art, or photojournalistic styles.
Are you certain that theyíre going to be able to provide you with the photos that you dream of? In most cases, they will fall short. Take some time to consider what you want and then ensure that the photographer you use is able to capture the style that you want. Once you have a style in mind, hire a photographer that can picture what it is you want.
Reliability and Communication
There are still even more reasons why you should choose a professional photographer in Lewes over an enthusiast or amateur friend or relative. A professional photographer will have the experience to ensure that photo sessions remain within the schedule and do not detract from other parts of the day.
A professional wedding photographer will have the communication skills to organise groups, move people and find out exactly what you want throughout the day. They have the experience to do so using body language, cues and verbally, without obstructing your guests, or spoiling the celebration of your big day in Lewes. Amateur photographers, no matter how hard they try, will find it hard to identify the right approach to photo sessions, being distant to a degree, professional, humorous, encouraging and supporting guests through the process, in order to capture those memorable shots.
Expert Wedding Photographers Give You more
Of all the people around you on your wedding day, your wedding photographer will probably be with you most. The wedding photographer will take preamble shots at the start of the day, shots at the venue, pictures at the reception and perhaps even pictures as you leave the venue at the end of the day.
Your wedding photographer is always near you, having been engaged to capture the emotion and style of your day in its entirety. If theyíre good at their job, youíll hardly notice theyíre there. Your photographer will notice if there are untucked shirts or jackets missing in photos, as they will have a keen eye for every detail.
Their detailed focus will help you fix any little issues and get better photos. Your wedding planner will spend far less time with you during the day in Lewes than your photographer will. The photographer will help the wedding party and guests be where they need to be and help to calm any emotions.
A Patient Demeanor
As a couple, you need to hire a professional photographer that you are comfortable with. Consider the amount of time you will spend with the person on one of the most important days of your life. That decision needs to feel right.
The professional photographer should have an incredible amount of patience, but also a good deal of empathy and subtle powers of persuasion. They need to flow with you and help the lens to capture your personality at its best throughout your special day in Lewes. An experienced professional will recognise that things rarely go exactly according to plan and will remain calm and effective throughout. The best wedding photographers flow with the event, are flexible and adaptable with the images they capture, whilst always maintaining professional standards.
What You Can Expect from a Wedding Photographer?
Often people have never been in front of a professional camera before their wedding day. This can be a source of anxiety and worry, especially for those that donít like the way they look in photographs.
Having spent some time considering the best professional wedding photographer in Lewes to match the styles you want, you can now rest assured that they will do certain things to make the process run smoothly.
A Professional Attitude and Good Time Keeping
Professionalism comes naturally if you hire someone based on their reputation and passion. Your photographer should be friendly, polite, punctual and appropriately dressed for the event. Your photographer should arrive early on the day, to scout the location having probably visited relevant locations several times already.
The Day Before the Wedding - the Rehearsal
If you plan to have a church ceremony, then itís customary to have a rehearsal a day or a week before. Your photographer may want to attend this to check the location and to have a brief discussion with the Vicar about where to stand during the service. The registrar will normally be consulted on the day of the wedding with civil ceremonies, in order for the wedding photographer to get the information they need.
The Day Arrives – the Wedding
Your wedding photographer will normally arrive to capture the bridal presentations, at a pre agreed time. You will have his undivided attention for the whole day, but without interrupting in any way. Jeff Woodall photography prides itself on its ability to remain unobtrusive but to always be available for questions and to keep spirits high, ensuring that no beautifully precious moment is lost. Jeff Woodall photography prides itself on its ability to remain unobtrusive but to always be available for questions and to keep spirits high, ensuring that no beautifully precious moment is lost.
Sometime after the first dance, your wedding photographer will have a conversation with you to find out whether there are any more pictures that you would like taken. If you decide to call it a day, the photographer will start their backup process. Jeff Woodall photography backs up all wedding pictures captured on the day to separate hard drives and then keeps them safe in a permanent backup until the end of the editing stage and provided to you. We understand just how precious your photographs are to you.
Wedding Photo Editing
Editing the images is an important part of preparing your wedding photography package, completed in the days after the wedding event in Lewes. At the start of the editing stage, the photos need to be sifted through so that the best ones can be selected. The pictures that have been chosen, then go through a subtle editing approach, with light touches to enhance the images.
The images provided to clients by Jeff Woodall photography are always high resolution. Some editing work is carried out as required, mainly consisting of colour balancing and cropping where necessary. Some images will be converted to black and white and may have other styles applied as appropriate.
The images are then exported and uploaded to an online password protected gallery, ready to be viewed by you, your friends and family as you wish. You will also be given all high resolution images on a USB stick. Sharing your wedding photos is great fun and so we provide you with the USB stick with high definition pictures and instructions of how to give access to your online gallery to friends and family.
Here to help after event
We know that you may want to put your photos in wedding photo books or maybe looking for a special wedding album and Jeff Woodall photography will be available to discuss how best to present your images after the wedding. Even if you’ve set your mind to the style and design of your digital photo book album, it can take a bit of time after the wedding day to decide on which photos to include.
In most cases the photo book capacity will be around 80 images. The design process will then begin, as your photographer works on the album.
What is included in a wedding photography package in Lewes?
Here is a list of things included in a wedding photography package
To find out more about what wedding packages normally include. Some of the items you’ll need to make some careful decisions about, whereas others take care of themselves. Which events you want the photographer at.
You may want the photographer for the engagement party, the bridal shower, as well as the wedding ceremony and after-party. This decision will dictate how many days you have for the photographer and will be made early on in your planning stages. Following discussion and decisions you need to get the dates organised and communicate them to the photographer.
How many hours of shooting in Lewes
Photographers will normally price up based on the likely time involved. At Jeff Woodall Photography we tend to use this method of pricing for events and for portraits, but we understand that each wedding has a bespoke schedule and that we need to be flexible to go with the day and so we work a little differently.
Photographers often [I used to] have different packages in Lewes i.e. ëPlatinumí, ëGoldí, ëSilverí, ëBronzeí, etc. When you start adding extras to these packages it all becomes a bit of a logistical nightmare to understand or work out the overall price. I now prefer to work on a fixed price for the full day’s coverage. I understand that there may be an extra hour here or there due to delays etc. The last thing you want to hear after that, is that you have been billed for an extra hour, as you only paid for the ëSilverí package of eight hours and for various reasons things ran late. For wedding ceremonies that are a long way away and need significant travel or even flights, there would be some negotiation required over accommodation, fuel, flights, food and refreshments.
Some of the differences between wedding styles explained
Fine Art Photography
Similar to photojournalistic photography, fine art photographers rarely take traditional shots. Rather, they photograph with an appreciation for the artistic side of people, the lighting options and the overall drama of the scene. Typically, a fine art photographer in Lewes is highly skilled at creating and staging photos that are artistic and beautifully full of drama, applying filters to photos during editing, including often using monochrome conversions.
Vintage Style Photography
The diversity and popularity of vintage photo filters has helped to drive this style of photography. The number of wedding couples that choose to have vintage wedding photography has grown fast. Something about old, timeless photographs appeals to people, maybe itís the feeling of nostalgia which this style of photography evokes. Through the use of various methods, such as colour filters used in this style, professional photographers are able to transform pretty standard looking images into works of art.
Traditional or Classical
With traditional or classical photography, nearly every picture is considered to be a posed portrait, even those moments that may appear to be more spontaneous. This won’t make the photograph appear forced or posed, but it’s likely that few spontaneous ëaction shotsí will be included in the mix. Traditional photographers will want to capture precious moments and formalities with artistic style and integrity and will look for shots that will work using that style during the wedding ceremony.
Photojournalistic or Reportage
Similar to a documentary style, photojournalism photography is about recording the event, rather than orchestrating them. With this type of photography, you’ll get the happy shots of guests together during the day, as well as more spontaneous and candid photos; the obligatory group shots and the formal bride and groom photos will of course also be included. Photojournalistic photographers prefer to capture spontaneous emotions and reactions, often by the use of close ups and candid techniques, they have a general philosophy of freezing that authentic moment in time, rather than creating orchestrated poses and scenes.
Black and White (Monochrome)
With black-and-white photographs you get a timeless and classical feel to images. Many clients appreciate how the nostalgia and mood of images can be enhanced by removing colour. Preference is what matters here. Using monochrome can enhance pictures by helping the subject and composition of photos really come to life. Black and white images can be effective in portraying an atmospheric, or nostalgic and timeless feel, that is sometimes elusive in the colour version.
Colour Popped and HDR Techniques
When shooting pictures, this photography technique requires attention to detail and the ability to consider various different elements and this complexity continues into the editing stage. The photographer that uses HDR and colour popped techniques will use them sparingly, only with the right images, to maximise the impact of those colour popped or high dynamic scenes.
