Why a professional photographer is the right choice for your wedding

If your wedding day is just around the corner, then you have probably planned most of what you need to plan. Catering for the event is in hand, the wedding cake is chosen and the wedding venue is all booked. You have chosen your wedding theme colours, selected your flowers and your wedding gown is hung up and ready to go.

You are now thinking about capturing the precious memories of your big day as photographic images. Perhaps you’ve spoken to your nephew about taking the photographs at your wedding.

The money you save on the photographs could be used to cover other wedding expenses. This is definitely a path you should avoid.

Your wedding photos should be entrusted to a professional wedding photographer

The benefits of hiring a professional photographer far outweigh the ultimate cost of having an amateur photographer taking your photos for free! Remember, the glances, the smiles and the connections that happen at a wedding are subtle and to capture them photographically is a skill.

Benefits of hiring pro-wedding photography

When you hire a specialist wedding photographer in Ditchling, the images you are presented with at the end will be of the highest quality and taken with the best photography equipment available.

As well as a wealth of knowledge and experience, wedding photographers have access to premium photography equipment and software to enable them to capture the best wedding pictures possible.

The physical equipment such as cameras, is just part of the equation in terms of capturing the best photographic images. Camera phones are pretty amazing these days and many people are tempted to try and save money by using them for their wedding photos. They often make a big mistake doing so. Everyone desires photographs that are skillfully composed and expertly captured for their wedding day. I’ll explain some of these benefits in greater detail, to help you understand the value in paying a professional wedding photographer for your big day.

Camera equipment expertise and knowledge, together with many other elements such as weather and lighting variations. A photographer won’t be able to do the best job possible if they don’t have the lighting options or lenses they need, or the skill to use them. Professional wedding photographers tend to have much better equipment and much more experience in using a diverse range of setups. A DSLR camera can be purchased by anyone almost certainly, but the full potential of this camera can only be unlocked by experienced professionals. Both the camera equipment and the photographer are equally important in creating and capturing great photos. In order to get your dream photos, you need high end camera equipment and a wedding photographer with the experience, talent and knowledge to use it appropriately to its full potential. This includes choosing the right equipment and camera settings for indoor and outdoor shots at the venue and the changing conditions at both.

The Photographer’s Role

One other very good reason to hire a professional wedding photographer in Ditchling, instead of using a relative, is that they’re less likely to become distracted. A professional photographer won’t be looking to get involved with the celebrations like a family member would.

Bride standing at castle steps looking through windows

A professional photographer won’t be tempted to chat with guests, grab a quick beer, or be first in line for cake when they should be taking an important shot. They’ll be concentrating on the job in hand, candidly capturing some of the best images they can for the duration of the event.

Wedding guests are also far more likely to respond to a professional, paid wedding photographer than they would be to a relative barking orders. If you have a member of your family taking photos of everyone, guests might not take the photo sessions so seriously.

Diverse Styles of Photography

If you are looking for photography that captures a certain style, then you should hire a photographer that is proficient in that style. The majority of amateur photographers would stare blankly if asked to tell you the difference between photojournalistic, traditional, fine art, or contemporary photographic styles.

Are you willing to gamble that theyíre able to produce the pictures that you will treasure? In most cases, they will fall short. Take some time to consider the photography styles you want to make sure that the wedding photographer you hire is in sync with you. Choose a professional who can immediately understand your style ideas when you explain them.

A Great Communicator and Reliable, too

There are numerous other factors that contribute to a professional photographer being a better choice than an amateur photographer or enthusiast. A professional photographer will have the experience to ensure that photo sessions remain within the schedule and do not detract from other parts of the day.

A professional will be able to carry the wedding party along and subtly communicate where your guests need to be. They will be able to use signals and body language, as well as their voice, to get people where they need to be in a pleasant way, enhancing the atmosphere of your celebration in Ditchling. Amateur photographers find it incredibly difficult to maintain the necessary distance, humour, intimacy and support along with effectively communicating to get the perfect shot.

You Get More with Professional Wedding Photographers

Thereís no person youíll be spending more time with on your wedding day than your photographer. The wedding photographer will take preamble shots at the start of the day, shots at the venue, pictures at the reception and perhaps even pictures as you leave the venue at the end of the day.

Your wedding photographer is always near you, having been engaged to capture the emotion and style of your day in its entirety. If they know what theyíre doing, you wonít even notice them. Your photographer will ensure everything is just as it should be, by noticing the small things like wonky ties, or untucked shirts.

Their detailed focus will help you fix any little issues and get better photos. The planner of your wedding will be with you for far less of the day than your photographer will. The experience of the photographer will help to ensure that the wedding party know where they are going and when and help to alleviate any anxiety or emotions as they arise.

The Epitome of Patience

Itís really important that you hire a wedding photographer that puts you at ease. Considering the amount of time this individual is going to be a major part of your wedding day, you need to choose wisely. The person you have decided on needs to be the right one.

The photographer should have a great mix of patience, empathy and skills of persuasion, as well as technically superb. They need to flow with you and help the lens to capture your personality at its best throughout your special day. A good photographer will remain balanced and relaxed even throughout the many challenges during the day. An expert wedding photographer is flexible and goes with the flow of the event, while maintaining a high level of professionalism.

Your Wedding Photographer and What to Expect?

Often people have never been in front of a professional camera before their wedding day. This can be a source of anxiety and worry, especially for those that don’t like the way they look in photographs.

Having invested some time to choose the right wedding photographer, you can be assured that they will do certain things to make the process less stressful.

Professional Conduct and Prompt Time Keeping

If you hire people for the right reasons, such as their passion, reputation and having looked at their work, professionalism will be a given. Your photographer should be friendly, polite, punctual and appropriately dressed for the event. Your photographer should get to your wedding venues earlier than the guests so that they can get a feel for the environment; they will probably have been to some of the venues already in order to understand the limitations and possibilities.

Rehearsing for the Wedding Day (The day before)

If you plan to have a church ceremony, then itís customary to have a rehearsal a day or a week before. Your photographer may want to attend this to check the location and to have a brief discussion with the Vicar about where to stand during the service. If you choose to have a civil ceremony, then it will most likely be a chat with a registrar on the day of the wedding in Ditchling.

Wedding Day (The big day)

Your photographer will be there to take pictures of bridal presentations, or at whatever time you have agreed beforehand. You will have his undivided attention for the whole day, but without interrupting in any way. Jeff Woodall photography’s ethos is to be very subtle, at staying in the background without interrupting the day, but being available to keep spirits high and answer any difficult questions, making sure that every single memory is captured in digital format.

At some point in the night, often after the first dance, your wedding photographer will check with you to find out if there’s anything else you would like to be pictured. The photographer will start to backup the photos if you are happy that they have captured all the moments you need. Jeff Woodall photography will keep all photos backed up on separate hard drives and on a remote facility for at least one year after your images have been delivered to you (usually longer). We treat your photographs as the precious digital data that they are.

The Editing of Wedding Photographs

Editing is a crucial stage in the wedding photography process and will be completed within the days that follow the event in . To tell the story of the wedding day the pictures need to capture the moments and so the first stage is going through all the photos and picking the best ones. A light edit is carried out on the images to ensure that it is subtle and natural.

Jeff Woodall photography only use beautifully sharp images. The pictures are cropped as necessary and the colours are balanced. Some of the pictures may be converted to monochrome and other style filters may be applied to further enhance the overall effects of your images.

The photos are then ready to be exported from the photo editing suite into an online password protected gallery, as well as uploaded to a USB stick and delivered to you, ready for sharing on social media and for printing. Sharing your wedding photos is great fun and so we provide you with the USB stick with high definition pictures and instructions of how to give access to your online gallery to friends and family.

Helping clients down the line

Once you have your photos, you’ll be looking for a way to present them and Jeff Woodall photography will be available to discuss the design of wedding photo books and to talk you through wedding album options. You probably have decided beforehand whether you wish to opt for a digital photo book album, the styles and colours etc., but it won’t be a short time after the ceremony that you decide which images you would like it to contain.

Typically the photographer will ask you to choose 80 or so images. Your photographer will then begin to design the album for you.

Wedding photography packages and what is included?

Here is a summary of what you will typically find in a wedding photography package. Some of the items you may not need to go through in detail, whilst others are highly important. How many events you want photographed.

You may want the photographer for the engagement party, the bridal shower, as well as the wedding ceremony and after-party. This decision will dictate how many days you have for the photographer and will be made early on in your planning stages. You need to communicate the dates and times of events with the photographer.

How many hours of shooting in Ditchling

Photographers will normally price up based on the likely time involved. Each wedding is individual, with exact timings that differ and ad hoc things that happened during the day and so we work a little differently on wedding packages in order to remain flexible.

Photographers often [I used to] have different packages i.e. Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze, etc. This way of doing things can get over complicated and even more so when additional options and extras are added to the mix. I find it works better to have a set price for a full day’s coverage. I don’t quibble over the extra hour we were there, due to late starts etc. We understand that things can run a little off schedule and don’t want you to be billed for an extra hour here or there if a Silver or Gold package, didn’t cover the hours to fully record your event. For wedding ceremonies that are a long way away and need significant travel or even flights, there would be some negotiation required over accommodation, fuel, flights, food and refreshments.

What are the differences between all these different styles?

Fine Art Photography

Similar to photojournalistic photography, fine art photographers rarely take traditional shots. They prefer to take an artistic view and capture elements, events and people with that mindset, always looking for dramatic lighting and backgrounds. The Fine Art photographer in Ditchling is adept in the use of black and white photography and at producing less candid, beautifully composed photos, full of drama and artistic beauty.

Vintage Style Photography

This style of photography was borne partly from the popularity of vintage photo filters. The number of weddings that are being photographed with a vintage wedding theme in mind, seems to be steadily growing. With vintage images there is certainly a timeless quality that can stir nostalgic emotion, which may be the cause of such an increase in the appeal of this artistic style. Vintage photography done well in Ditchling, transforms ordinary images into artistic work of art using colour filters and various props and lighting tricks.

Traditional or Classical

With traditional or classical photography, details of shots are considered staged, even those that you may think look spontaneous. With traditional or classical wedding photography, it’s unlikely that you’ll get lots of action and movement in photos, but the images shouldnít feel unnaturally forced either. Traditional photographers are likely to want to record of the formalities of the wedding ceremony and to portray the dignity and meaning of the ceremony, with subtle lighting.

Photojournalistic or Reportage

This style of photography is less about orchestrating and creating moments to capture on camera, than reporting those special moments of the day. The formal shots you would expect at every wedding, will be captured, as well as group and individual ëgrip and griní wedding guest shots. Photographers with a photojournalistic style will shy away from orchestrating too many moments during the day, except those formal group shots, or bride and groom images they need to take. They prefer to record close-ups of the bride, groom and wedding guests and really document the dayís actual emotions and feelings.

Black and White (Monochrome)

The black and white style is excellent for creating nostalgic and timeless photographs. Black-and-white photos are appreciated by many for their ability to enhance the mood and atmosphere of the scene being depicted. It really comes down to what you prefer. Not everyone prefers monochrome images, but there’s no doubt that photographs can be made more compelling by emphasising areas of focus and the composition with this method. Removing the colour from images and creating black and white can evoke a certain ambience within photographs that colour sometimes lacks.

Colour Popped and HDR Techniques

This area of photography requires skill in techniques that involve shooting with a lot of attention to detail and the post processing becomes a little more complex too. Photographers who use HDR and colour popping techniques have the awareness, the creative eye and the technical photographic and editing capabilities to produce stunning images.
