Why engage a wedding photographer for your big day?

If your wedding is coming up soon then you have probably planned most of the necessities. You’ve booked your caterer, cake and the venue. You’ve tried on and love your wedding dress and have chosen table decorations and flowers.

Your mind is now turning to how you are going to capture the big day photographically. Your uncle is a good amateur photographer and perhaps you’re considering asking him.

That way you can save yourself some money, diverting the cash to other areas of your budget. This really is not the way that you should proceed.

A professional wedding photographer should take your photos

It’s a much better idea to have a professional photographer get it right, than save some money and have an amateur photographer miss those important big and little details! The photos that are taken must capture those special seconds that mean the most to you.

The equipment that wedding photographers use goes far beyond the camera, which is only a part of what it takes to achieve the quality photography you need at your wedding. The advent of camera phones has for some become a tempting way to try and save money on wedding photography. This could probably be one of the biggest mistakes you make. We know everyone wants the best possible photos they can get for their wedding. We’ll take a more in depth look now at what you get when you hire a professional wedding photographer, which adds that extra value and makes it worth your while.

Experts with their camera gear and a host of external factors, such as weather conditions. A photographer’s resultant images will not be as impressive as they could be if they don’t have a variety of camera lenses and the knowledge and skills to use them, together with various lighting options. Professional wedding photographers tend to have much better equipment and much more experience in using a diverse range of setups. Anyone can buy a DSLR camera, but it takes skill to unlock the potential of the equipment. What you need to get the best wedding photography experience is high end, appropriate camera equipment and a seasoned wedding photography professional who knows how to use it to its full potential. The skill of the photographer includes being able to take great photos in diverse lighting scenarios, depending on the weather, or the lighting at the wedding event venues.

The Role the Photographer Plays

Another very good reason to engage the services of a professional wedding photographer is that they’re going to be far less likely to become distracted than a family member or relative charged with capturing the dayís event. The professional photographer wonít be striving to enjoy the day and become part of the celebration, like a family member would want to do.

Bride standing at castle steps looking through windows

They wonít miss important shots while eating a slice of cake, drinking alcohol or chit chatting with relatives. They will be concentrating on the job of getting the best possible pictures they can for your wedding.

Something else that is a factor is that wedding guests tend to respect photo opportunities much more when they are gently marshalled by professional photographers. Photoshoots taken by a relative tend to be less organised and taken less seriously than those arranged by professionals.

The Style of the Photography

If you want a specific style of photography, you should hire a professional photographer whose style matches yours. How many amateurs do you think are even aware of the differences between fine art, contemporary, traditional, or photojournalistic photography styles?

Are you certain that theyíre going to be able to provide you with the photos that you dream of? Often, this is not the case. Take some time to consider the photography styles you want to make sure that the wedding photographer you hire is in sync with you. Once you have in mind what you want to achieve, hire a professional who gets it.

Communication Skills and Timeliness

There are many more reasons that a professional photographer is a better choice than using a relative or enthusiast. Itís easy to understate how a professional photographer can contribute to the day; blending into the background when necessary and getting involved to smooth the schedule and push things along when time is getting tight.

A professional wedding photographer will be able to communicate effectively and persuasively with guests to ensure they are where they need to be. They have the experience to do so using body language, cues and verbally, without obstructing your guests, or spoiling the celebration of your big day in Isfield. Amateur photographers, no matter how hard they try, will find it hard to identify the right approach to photo sessions, being distant to a degree, professional, humorous, encouraging and supporting guests through the process, in order to capture those memorable shots.

Professional Wedding Photographers Provide More

Of all the people around you on your wedding day, your wedding photographer will probably be with you most. They will photograph you getting ready and spending time before the event and perhaps be around all the way until you leave the venue.

You wedding photographer has been hired to capture every special moment of the day, whilst staying in the background unnoticed and will do that from start to end. If a photographer knows what theyíre doing, they wonít be noticed throughout the day. Your photographer will ensure every shot is perfect and no detail is amiss, such as a lipstick stain on the teeth, or button holes that are wonky.

They will be there to inform you of this and help you try to fix it. Your wedding planner will have lots of other things to do and won’t shadow you all day, not like your photographer will. The photographer will help the wedding party be where they need to be, when they need to be and to be as calm as they should be.

The Epitome of Patience

Your wedding photographer should be professional and help you relax throughout the day. Youíre going to be spending a lot of time with this person on your wedding day. That decision needs to feel right.

The professional photographer will have to be technically skilled, with an added mix of patience, experience and understanding. It is their job to help the day flow and to bring out your personality and capture it with their photography skills. A good photographer will remain balanced and relaxed even throughout the many challenges during the day. An expert wedding photographer is flexible and goes with the flow of the event, while maintaining a high level of professionalism.

What to Expect from Your Wedding Photographer?

For most people, the wedding day will be the first time they find themselves in front of a professional photographer’s camera lens. As well as being anxious about the big day, having a camera pointed at you all day can make you feel even more uncomfortable, especially if you feel that photos donít generally flatter you.

Having spent some time considering the best professional wedding photographer to match the styles you want, you can now rest assured that they will do certain things to make the process run smoothly.

Promptness and Professionalism

If you hire people for the right reasons, such as their passion, reputation and having looked at their work, professionalism will be a given. It’s important that the wedding photographer you choose gets there on time, has a great attitude and gets on with people. By arriving early your wedding photographer will be able to scout the location and choose some excellent vantage points, although they will probably have visited your key event locations prior to the big day.

Rehearsing for the Wedding Day (The day before)

In many cases, church wedding ceremonies have a rehearsal during the week before the wedding. Your wedding photographer may well want to attend this wedding rehearsal to speak to the Vicar about where to stand during the ceremony and to find out more about the venue. With civil ceremonies, the photographers will normally have a discussion with the registrar prior to the wedding starting in Isfield.

The Big Wedding Day

Your wedding photographer will tend to arrive to take photos of the bridal presentations, the timings will have been agreed. He will be there for the rest of the day but will not interrupt the flow in any way. It’s crucial to the team at Jeff Woodall photography that every precious memory is captured on camera and that we remain unobtrusive, so the day can play out naturally; we are of course available for any questions and we strive to raise the spirits of everyone in the party. Jeff Woodall photography will be poised to capture all of the beautiful moments through the day, without intruding in any way.

At a certain time in the evening, usually after the first dance, your photographer will approach you to see if there’s anything else you would like him to capture. If you are satisfied that your photographer has captured the day, he will begin the process of backing up all of the photos. Every photo will be stored on a reliable backup storage device and kept safe until such a time as the photos have been through the full editing process and have been delivered to you to your satisfaction. We understand just how precious your photographs are to you.

Wedding Photo Editing

In the days after the wedding the important editing stage is completed. The photographs need to tell the story of the wedding day and so the first stage is going through all the pictures and selecting the best ones. The pictures that have been chosen, then go through a subtle editing approach, with light touches to enhance the images.

Jeff Woodall photography only use beautifully sharp images. The pictures that require a little work are edited for colour balance and size. Various effects can be achieved during the post processing of your images, including monochrome conversions.

When the editing process is complete, the photos are exported from the suite of editing tools and the files uploaded to an online password protected gallery for viewing and also uploaded to a USB stick; you can then distribute the photos as you want and share on social media. Weíll provide you with all the instructions you need for how to access the online gallery and how to share it with your family and friends and we’ll also send you the USB stick with easy to use instructions on how to share your photos online.

After care

We know that you may want to put your photos in wedding photo books or maybe looking for a special wedding album and Jeff Woodall photography will be available to discuss how best to present your images after the wedding. It can take some time after the wedding ceremony to decide on which pictures to include in your digital photo book album, even if you have already decided on colours, styles and designs.

Typically the photographer will ask you to choose 80 or so images. The design process will then begin, as your photographer works on the album.

Wedding photography packages and what is included?

To find out more about what wedding packages normally include. Some of the items below are highly important, whereas others you may not even need to talk about. Number of events to be photographed

You’ll probably want the photographer for the wedding ceremony and some or all of the after-party but it’s worth thinking about whether you want photos from the bridal shower and the engagement party too. This would equate to how many days the photographer provides to you and will be early on in the decision-making process. You need to communicate which events you want captured to get them in the diary.

Number of hours for the shoot in Isfield

Photographers will normally price up based on the likely time involved. I often use this for portrait and events but in terms of weddings, I have simplified the process to a large extent, due to the flexible nature of the day and the fact that each wedding is quite different and difficult to predict in terms of exact timings.

If you have looked around already, then you probably know that photographers frequently have different packages that they offer such as a Platinum, gold, Silver and a Bronze package. What exactly gets delivered becomes complicated, especially in those cases where additional options are added to these package deals. When you choose me, you get a fixed price for the day, with no hidden extras. Obviously, this is within reason, but I tend to arrive well early to get shots of getting ready and to remain long after the first dance, because there is still additional photographic value to be had. Travelling to and accommodation at weddings. If there is travel involved to the wedding ceremony there would need to be some negotiation over the expenses involved in terms of accommodation, fuel or flights, food and refreshments.

What are the differences between all these different styles?

Fine Art Photography

In the same way that photographers of a photojournalistic genre don’t tend to take traditional shots very often, fine arts photographers rarely do either. Events, people and elements are photographed with a more artistic approach, with the use of various lighting techniques. The Fine Art photographer is adept in the use of black and white photography and at producing less candid, beautifully composed photos, full of drama and artistic beauty.

Vintage Style Photography

The diversity and popularity of vintage photo filters has helped to drive this style of photography. The number of wedding couples that choose to have vintage wedding photography has grown fast. This style of photography can evoke feelings of nostalgia and the old and timeless nature of that style really seems to appeal to people. Colour filters together with other post processing methods have the capacity to translate rather plain images into artistic pieces and photographers in Isfield who have a keen eye in this area, can work wonders with wedding photographs.

Traditional or Classical

Even apparently spontaneous shots are often treated as staged portrait pictures with traditional or classical photography. This won’t make the photograph appear forced or posed, but it’s likely that few spontaneous action shots will be included in the mix. The wedding ceremony will be captured with the aim of taking pictures that are artistic and functional, but perhaps driven less by drama or emotion.

Photojournalistic or Reportage

Similar to a documentary style, photojournalism photography is about recording the event, rather than orchestrating them. The formal shots you would expect at every wedding, will be captured, as well as group and individual wedding guest shots. The photojournalistic wedding photographer tells the story of the day, using a mix of close-up and candid shots, showing spontaneous reaction and recording the atmosphere of the event , rather than orchestrating the scenes.

Black and White (Monochrome)

The black and white style is excellent for creating nostalgic and timeless photographs. Many clients appreciate how the nostalgia and mood of images can be enhanced by removing colour. It’s all about preference. Not everyone prefers monochrome images, but there’s no doubt that photographs can be made more compelling by emphasising areas of focus and the composition with this method. Removing the colour from images and creating black and white can evoke a certain ambience within photographs that colour sometimes lacks.

Colour Popped and HDR Techniques

Attention to detail during the shoot and excellent editing skills are required for this type of photography technique. Photographers who use HDR and colour popping techniques have the awareness, the creative eye and the technical photographic and editing capabilities to produce stunning images.
